MANILA - Under Britain's new schools curriculum, children as young as 5 will be taught the basics of sex and the effects of illegal drugs, internet reports said.

The new Personal, Social, Healtth and Economic education curriculum, set to take effect in both primary and secondary schools on September 2011, aims to "help children and young people deal with real life issues as they grow."

According to a Telegraph.co.uk report, once students reach secondary school, they will learn about contraception, HIV and AIDS, pregnancy, and relationships - including civil parterships and same-sex marriage.

While religious schools or "faith schools" cannot reject the curriculum, the Secretary of State for Children, Schools and Families Ed Balls said they can continue to teach sex and drugs lessons in line with the school's religious beliefs.

"You can teach the promotion of marriage, you can teach that you shouldn't have sex outside of marriage. What you can't do is deny young people information about contraception outside of marriage," Balls was quoted in the Telegraph.

Parents can also withdraw their child or children from sex education classes until they are 19. With reports from Telegraph.co.uk.
