Enrile slams ‘cellphone load robbery’

Next to death and taxes, cellphones and their service problems are the greatest equalizer. No one is spared, not even the third highest official of the land as Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile has just discovered, when it comes to problems on cellphone services.

“Last Monday, May 25, 2009, I used my prepaid unit to make a call. A voice recorder intoned that my prepaid unit had no load, that it had a zero balance. I was amazed because at seven o’clock in the morning of that day my prepaid unit had a balance of P389,” said Enrile.

For two more days Enrile said his cellphone load continued to disappear. All in all, Enrile said he lost P544 in phone credits.

When news of his problems regarding his cellphone load came out, Enrile said he was flooded with similar complaints.

“Maids, drivers, workers, teachers told me we had the same experience but we cannot do anything. Why is this being done? Maybe a ghost is stealing my load, I do not know,” said Enrile.

Enrile likewise deplored the practice of telecommunication companies in setting an expiration for using phone credits.

Related complaints

The case of Enrile’s disappearing cellphone load however has opened the floodgates to related complaints from other senators.

Sen. Joker Arroyo said telcos charge per minute of calls even though the law says every six seconds.

Sen. Francis “Chiz” Escudero meanwhile complained of frequent dropped calls as a result of overloaded cellsites.

Sen. Richard Gordon, for his part, cited unsolicited or spam messages such as ringtones.

“You are enrolled in this ringtone provider and then they can charge every time they ring the tone lalalala. Every lalala your load is charged,” said Enrile.

Enrile said that as of end-2008, an estimated 68 million Filipinos have cellular phones. 97 percent of them or close to 66 million use prepaid service making the problem of vanishing credits a multi-million peso racket, rued Enrile.

The senators said it will look into complaints against services of telcos.

“Punish, if necessary people responsible for this dastardly game of robbing people of their money,” said Enrile.

Enrile’s cellphone service provider Globe Telecoms declined to comment.

sana nagtagalog ka na lang dude, wrong grammar ka kasi e. hindi ka naman galit sa period? yan tuloy nahiya na magenglish si star99 dahil sa post mo.

They're not only abusing the

They're not only abusing the prepaid but also the post paid. They didn't count my sulitxt and now i'm charged 600+ pesos on top of my bill because they told me I didn't register! I actually did. :| Globe really likes to eat innocent people's money. They're soo GREEDY! I hope this thing would be resolved. I really would like to support Senator Enrile -Student

same complaint... using another network!

I REALLY HOPE this matter would progress and be resolved in favor of mobile subscribers, especially those using prepaid.

Though i use smart comms. prepaid sim, i have encountered personally being charged Php2.50 automatically deducted from my load balance. With much arguing for more than 20 mins with the customer service rep of this network, i was able to have the complaint registered with reference numbers. And indeed in less than 24 hours, the Php2.50 was refunded/returned.

Though a very minimal amount, i wonder how many of the prepaid subscriber of smart were charged the same way and our fellow filipinos just don't bother anymore. Robbers getting away smiling!

With my other relatives, who also use smart comms prepaid sims, its much worse, hundreds of pesos lost in seconds when i send them load of at least 300pesos.

Mr. Enrile, please go ahead and have these telcos investigated and help protect the consumers.

NTC should be penalized as well for not doing their jobs! I tried browing the NTC site to register a complaint and i just have to let go of it since the process is too tedious and time consuming, NOT USER FRIENDLY!

I’m a globe subscriber too!

Finally…Mr. Enrile is the answered to my wish that somebody would act against on this kind of anomaly on prepaid load!..I used to call Globe every time that my load disappears. One good point is that once you asked for credit they will response right away!..but the question is What the hell is happening!?!?..even Mr. Enrile was victimized by this kind of load robbery…I therefore conclude: Sobrang hirap na talaga ng Pilipinas..!

In other countries

Sa thailand, ang validity ang nag-eexpire, yon loads, hindi. for example, nagload ka ng baht, you have to use that for one week. after one week, hindi mo na magagamit yong load mo, dahil expired yong date of validity. pero once na nagload ka ulit, example another sixty baht, ibabalik nila yong dating load mo. so you will have load of baht, pero one week lang uli ang validity.

sana ganyan din sa pinas, kasi sa totoo lang, mas madaming pera ang mga thais kesa sa pinoys, pero mas nakakawawa pa ang mga pinoys. Masyado tayong pinagsa-salamantahan ng mga telecom in connivance or with the approval of the NTC
