MANILA - After being freed from prison early this year, convicted child rapist and former Zamboanga del Norte Rep. Romeo Jalosjos is now asking Malacanang to grant him absolute pardon. Will President Arroyo heed the request of one of her known allies?
Malacanang has kept mum on the issue since it has not received a copy of Jalosjos' application from the Board of Pardons and Parole (BPP), according to Press Secretary Cerge Remonde. Still, he stressed that the Office of the President will treat Jalosjos' request "as any application."
"It will be solely based on merit," Remonde said, adding that Jalosjos is not guaranteed of an absolute pardon despite his family's ties with the President.
On Thursday, it was reported that Jalosjos applied for absolute pardon before the BPP on September 30, just 2 months before the deadline for the filing of certificates of candidacy for the 2010 national elections.
Jalosjos reportedly wants to be given absolute pardon so he can reclaim his seat in Congress, a plan that he denied last March.
As a woman
In 1997, Jalosjos was convicted by the Makati Regional Trial Court for 2 counts of statutory rape and 6 counts of acts of lasciviousness under the Revised Penal Code. His victim was an 11-year-old girl.
He was initially sentenced to 2 life terms and was ordered to pay P400,000 in civil indemnity and another P400,000 in moral damages. But by 2007, President Arroyo commuted his sentence to 16 years, 3 months, and 3 days.
Jalosjos eventually walked free after serving 12 years in prison, due to his so-called good conduct in the New Bilibid Prison.
Although Malacanang has not made any direct statement on the matter, Remonde implied that Jalosjos may have a hard time getting Mrs. Arroyo's approval, especially since what he did was a crime against women.
"The President is always first a woman, and second, president. Hindi maiwawaksi ang kanyang pagkababae sa kanyang pagkapresidente," Remonde said. With a report from Willard Cheng, ABS-CBN News

What Merit, Mr. Remonde..that he had not raped another minor while out on Parole? By Gosh, he would had been hanged by the Neck, if justice had to be served and now Absolute Pardon is being discussed...it is really sickening!
