MANILA - San Miguel Beer hacked out a 95-78 win over Barangay Ginebra to level their best-of-seven finals of the 2008-09 Motolite-PBA Fiesta Conference Friday night at the Araneta Coliseum.
Marc Pingris scored 10 of his 14 points in the fourth quarter, allowing the Beermen to even the series,1-1.
Gabe Freeman gathered 23 points and 17 rebounds despite foul trouble but it was Pingris who saved the day for San Miguel.
Anthony Washington added 17 points for the Beermen, who bowed in Game 1, 96-102.
“I think the players came out more mentally prepared this game,” said San Miguel head coach Siot Tanquingcen. “At the same time, we caught them on an off-night maybe because we played well defensively.
The game, however, was marred by an ugly ending when Pingris and Danny Ildefonso tried to quarrel with a fan at the baseline of the Ginebra bench.
Ildefonso and Pingris are expected to appear at the PBA Office Saturday morning to explain their sides. Fines are expected to be imposed on the players.
Helterbrand hailed as ‘Best Player’
Jay-Jay Helterbrand bagged his second Best Player of the Conference, beating Burger King do-it-all forward Arwind Santos and San Miguel’s Dondon Hontiveros.
Helterbrand also won the award last season in the same tournament after leading the Kings to a title against Air21, now Burger King, in six epic games.
Beermen’s reinforcement Gabe Freeman was named Best Import with 1,741 points after winning over Ginebra import David Noel who had only 561.
