Ronnie “The Volcano” Alcano and Francisco “Django” Bustamante vanquished their respective foes to lead the RP contingent in entering the third round of this year’s US Open 9-Ball Championship in Chesapeake, Virginia.
Alcano started strong against Matt Clatterbuck of the US to run away with an 11-4 win, according to SportsNews.ph.
It was Alcano’s second straight win in the $250,000 event after ending as the tournament’s runner-up last year.
Former world no.1 Bustamante also scored a win over Keith Brinton, 11-8, to strengthen his US Open campaign and join Alcano in advancing to the third round.
Other Filipinos who scored wins are veteran international player Rodolfo Luat, Warren Kiamco, Lee Van Corteza, Ramil Gallego, and US-based Jose “Amang” Parica.
Luat demolished Don Polo, 11-2, while Kiamco defeated Jason Klatt, 11-5.
Corteza blasted Abdullah El-Yousef, 11-5, as Gallego outlasted former champion Gabe Owen, 11-9. Parica, meanwhile, held off Aki Heiskanen, 11-9.
The tournament, which will run until October 25, has attracted a total of 238 players from around the world. The winner will get the $40,000 top purse.
Only two Filipinos have won the title so far – Efren “Bata” Reyes in 1999 and Alex Pagulayan in 2005.
